Complex Fractions

In 7th Grade, Unit 1 – Functions with Rational Numbers, we have found some sample problems in some Common Core books, etc… that have simplifying complex fractions problems. However, in the standards, we could not find complex fractions mentioned.

Samples:

(3/7 – 1/3) / (2/3 – 1/7)

and

(3 – 1/4) / (2/5)

We did determine that complex fractions such as (1/4)/(1/2) should be included in the Rate unit but some clarification on Unit 1 would be helpful for us.

There is a footnote on 7.NS.3 which says “Computations with rational numbers extend the rules for manipulating fractions to complex fractions.” (I agree it’s a little subtle!)
